The brief called for significant changes and additions to a modest 1950’s hip-roofed house on a grid of narrow streets where, until the 1970’s, single-family “chalets” had been the dominant typology. Its current neighbours, seven storey apartment buildings, left this narrow site in shade for much of the year and code restrictions ruled out the building’s total demolition as site setbacks would have left a mere 3-metre-wide building footprint. This set the project’s course: a renovation accomplished through bold extraction and addition.
An attic floor is added as well as a glass and louvre-enclosed gallery, oriented to the garden, whose light construction contrasts with the solidity of the pre-existing masonry walls that were reused and rendered with external lime mortar thermal insulation.
The original volume’s narrowness is compensated on its side facades by the introduction of new oversized windows, with louvres for privacy, affording natural light to the plan’s centre, along with a light monitor above a new stair that scissors along the north wall carving out views to living spaces, widening at landings and visually connecting three floors. Interior shutters are located strategically to multiply interior vistas and provide cross ventilation as needed.
Stacked above the dining room are a bedroom and a home office, both with adjoining terraces. High parapet walls enclose a street-facing roof terrace that benefits from the house’s longest sun exposure. Two pergolas, used for shade and privacy, demarcate an outdoor room at the garden’s rear and frame the entrance door respectively.
A repurposed garage frames the garden on one flank, while the other is marked by the plinth of a raised pool. Citrus trees are saved and new specimens, shrubs and vines added. Paths and platforms are paved using exposed-aggregate concrete, plinths are natural stone and the “yard” is pebble gravel.
